Social media is designed to amplify fear.
Fear keeps you scrolling.

Travel brands and tourism boards, on the other hand, have a duty of care.

They’re on full alert. They’re rerouting. Monitoring. Adjusting.

Travel wisely doesn’t mean travel fearfully.

It means informed decisions over emotional reactions.

Every time I step into a country completely differ Every time I step into a country completely differently to my own… I’m reminded why I love travel so much.

Japan challenged me in the best way.

Different rhythms.
Different rules.
Different ways of showing respect.

The warmth and pride in culture is something you feel instantly. There’s something powerful about being the outsider. It forces you to observe more closely. Listen more carefully. Appreciate that little bit more.

That’s when travel stops being a checklist… and becomes something special.

I’m really proud of this episode. “Journey to Japan” which airs:

I’m proud to share that the next episode in our “Journey To…” series is “Journey to Japan”, airing nationally on Channel Nine in Australia and streaming on 9Now this Saturday the 28 February at 4pm.

Japan is having a well-deserved moment in the spotlight and after filming this episode, it’s opened my eyes to this destination.

Beyond the well-known highlights, we uncovered experiences that reveal a different side of the country. I was genuinely taken back by just how safe, seamless and easy it is to travel throughout Japan.

The people are awesome. Their warmth and respect is incredibly powerful and instantly makes you feel welcome.

Beautiful landscapes. Extraordinary cultural sites. Sensational cuisine.

A huge thank you to the Proud Nomads team for your exceptional work as always! You always go above and beyond and I’m really thankful.

It was also great working with so many fantastic partners on this project so looking forward to helping spread the word about your beautiful destinations.

“I need a holiday from my holiday.” This used to “I need a holiday from my holiday.”

This used to be me…and we all know someone who travels like this :)

The alarm’s set, the itinerary’s packed, and by the time you get home you’re completely fried… even though you’ve “just had time off”.

After years working in travel television, you’d probably expect me to be the most over-planned traveller out there. The reality is, I rarely get the chance to travel with my family, so when we recently took a family trip to Vanuatu, I decided to approach things very differently.

We planned almost nothing.

Instead of locking in a schedule, we woke up each day and decided what felt right. It was more authentic, more relaxed, and more memorable than many tightly planned trips I’ve been on…and can’t remember.

When I treat travel like a checklist instead of an experience, that’s when I end up needing a break from the holiday itself.

Are you a planner, a go-with-the-flow traveller, or somewhere in between?

Here’s a few of our unplanned Vanuatu moments!

Do you need a holiday from your holiday!?? You he Do you need a holiday from your holiday!??

You hear it so many times.

With all my travel around the world, I’ve come up with a bit of a principle that I think will help a lot of people when they’re booking their itinerary.

I call it the 3 & 1 Principle.

Super simple. The way it works is that you book three days of a great itinerary. Experiences, day trips, dinners, going to cafes, all that type of stuff. But on the fourth day, you leave it totally empty.

Now there’s three things that this does.

# 1. It gives you a break from the chaos of travel. So many times you look back and go, “I don’t even remember what I did.” So it slows that process down.

#2 It gives you a chance to breathe and just relax, enjoy your moment, take a bit of a breath that you need so many times when you’re on your trip,

#3. It gives you a chance to connect with the destination. Just go out, go for a walk, open some doors, meet some people, and you’ll find that you’ll have such an incredible connected day that it could be one of the days that you appreciate the most in your whole itinerary.

Let me know what you think and if it’ll work for you, your family and your friends?

Turns out the best travel moments don’t care how o Turns out the best travel moments don’t care how organised you are.

After 25 years working in travel television, you get used to everything being planned to the minute. But one night in Kyoto, filming Journey to Japan, my cameraman and I did something very un-TV.

We had no itinerary. No dinner reservation. No expectations.

During a stroll through the streets of Kyoto, we found a door with a single light above it, no sign. We opened the door, and accidentally made the best decision of the trip!

Inside: ten seats, great sake, and a room full of locals who clearly hadn’t been expecting us.
Funnily enough, it ended up being one of the most memorable nights we had in Japan - not because it was planned, but because it wasn’t!

It was a good reminder for me that the moments travellers remember most aren’t always the ones on the schedule. Sometimes they’re behind the doors you didn’t plan to open...

Have any of your best moments been totally unplanned?
